Steaming hot bone broth

If you want to look younger, have strong muscles & bones, heal your gut, have healthy digestion, thick hair and strong nails, then you need to be drinking bone broth.  To me, bone broth is one of the most essential and nourishing foods we can incorporate into our daily routine.  It’s the ultimate superfood really.  Here are some basics for you:

What is bone broth? It’s essentially stock, that is, bones and vegetables cooked in water.  Chefs use it daily to add flavour to food, made in the correct way it adds so many essential nutrients and benefits.

Why is it so good for me? Bone broth cooked in water with vinegar added (for necessary acidity) will slowly leach minerals and nutrients from the bones into that water. A good bone broth contains nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and other trace nutrients essential for healthy bones and much more. This nutrient-rich elixir has been found to contain glycosaminoglycans which are said to support skin and tissues – even promoting younger and more collagen-rich skin. So if you want to look younger, add in lots of bone broth! Bone broth is great for people with musculoskeletal issues as the nutrients derived from the bones and cartilage will nourish and heal those parts of our body. The collagen and other amino acids also help to heal the lining of the small intestine so it’s great for ‘leaky gut’ which most people likely suffer from.  It’s an all-around superfood!

Is it easy to make? Bone broth literally takes about 5 minutes to prepare and then 24-72 hours to cook.  Here is a recipe for simple but nourishing beef broth which is arguably the most nourishing of the broths.  You can easily adapt for chicken too if you prefer.

How much do I need to drink?  A cup a day is ideal but obviously not achievable for everyone.  Even a few cups a week will make a difference to overall health.  I love to drink mine with coconut oil, sea salt, and some added collagen to really up the healing ante.  Here’s my delicious recipe for you to try.  You can also add it to stews and other dishes to be enjoyed by the whole family, it makes everything taste better too.

Winter is the perfect time to incorporate this super healthy habit into your lives.  Let me know how you go, I’d love to hear from you if you start making bone broth on a regular basis.
